Central Massachusetts, historically home to farms and factories, has a new claim to fame: cannabis country.
Worcester County has been the center of interest from marijuana business since adult-use licensing came on the scene a year ago. Its cities and small towns have what marijuana establishments, especially growers, are looking for in spades: underused industrial space, low real estate costs, a network of major highways and in many instances, business-friendly communities eager to increase their tax base.
Worcester itself, New England’s second-largest city, is a target retail market as well.
Five Worcester County communities appear in a relatively substantial number of marijuana establishment license applications filed with the state Cannabis Control Commission so far, giving a look at potential economic drivers for parts of the region.
